Dataset Details

All heritage properties in Oakville are included in the Oakville Heritage Register, an official list of properties which are identified by the town as having cultural heritage value or interest. This is required in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act (OHA). The Heritage Register includes the following types: (1) individually designated properties which fall under Part IV of the OHA; (2) properties designated within Heritage Conservation Districts which fall under Part V of the OHA; (3) properties which are not designated but believed to be of cultural heritage value or interest (listed properties).

History: This property was first built on in 1833 by John Forman. He operated the frame inn on the site as the Oakville Temperance House until 1859 when it was purchased by Jacob Barnes and operated as a licensed premises. After Barne's death the building was acquired by Hugh Coyne in the early 1870s. At this time the lot was divided and the homes presently located on them were built. The properties went through a number of owners including William Sinclair Davis, a local realtor and financier who was instrumental in the development of the Park Avenue area.
Description: The building appears to be the older of the pair of very similar buildings at 136 and 140 Trafalgar Road. The house is 1 1/2 storey stucco saltbox with a central gable. It is influenced by Greek Revival style. Other notable features include semi-circular round headed windows, central pedimented doorway and projecting bay windows.

History: Built by William Biggar Chisholm, the son of the founder of Oakville. William was a very active member of the Oakville community specifically in politics and he lived in this house until his death in 1889. His family continued to live in the house for an additional 16 years until the property was sold to Thomas Granger Wilson. In 1919 it was sold again to William Thomas Merry who owned the property until 1944.
Description: Victorian Architecture with influences of the late Classic Revival style and Italianate style. Notable features include a medium pitched roof, centered gable façade, an ogee-shaped medallions in the gables, intricate leaded glass, double doorway with full length transom panel and side panels with flush lights.

History: Captain Francis Brown House. The house was built by Captain Francis Brown from England. Brown established a brewery in Oakville in 1867 and was a ship captain. The house was threatened by fire in 1893, which destroyed the McDonald Planing Mill situated across the street.
Description: Built in Italianate style with 18" stucco-covered walls constructed of random beach stones set in thick mortar. Notable features include a decorative cupola, casement windows, shutter blinds and decorative door surround.

History: Property was originally owned by William Chisholm and then in 1839 it was sold to his son, John Alexander Chisholm followed by John's wife, Sarah and then her son Charles Pettit Chisholm in 1891. The house was built by Charles between 1891 and 1894.
Description: Gable ends are faced with decorative wooden shingles. Enormous bargeboards are composed of complex geometric design with fans, quatrefoils and sunburst patterns.

History: Built around 1870 and known as “Potter’s Folly” after the builder John Potter, a carpenter who worked as a shipwright for William Chisholm. The building was rented to the Presbyterian Congregation until they bought it in 1881 and numerous other ministers dwelt there over the years. In 1927 the property was sold to William Robert Adamson, an active member of the Knox Church Board of Managers.
Description: Italianate Villa style house with central third storey tower and ornate detailing. Notable features include richly detailed cornice and roof brackets, classical window and door crowns, 6/6 double hung windows and original shutters.

History: Property was originally owned by James Williamson, a farmer. The property was then acquired in 1876 by Henry Gulledge, a crafter of harnesses and leather saddles. The dwelling was constructed in 1876 by the Freestone Brothers, George and John, plasterers, and James, a mason.
Description: Victorian Picturesque architecture. Notable features include the round headed paired windows on the second floor, brick buff coloured quoins, multiple gables and the detailed woodwork over the bay windows.

History: Referred to as the Melancthon Simpson House. The property was bought by Melancthon Simpson in 1846. Melancthon and his brother John built some of the finest ships to come from Oakville and area shipyards between 1849 and 1864. The builder of the house is unknown.
Description: Regency Cottage. Earliest known example of Regency design in Oakville. Medium pitched hip roof and symmetrically located bays on the front facade. The front verandah is decorated with finely crafted treillage. Main entranceway is accentuated by the entablature above the opening and the flanking sidelights.

History: In 1980 the existing building was slated to be demolished and replaced by a brick retirement home. At that time the property was designated by LACAC and developed into the MacLachlan School.
Description: Built in the Second Empire style with a bell-cast mansard roof, a tall central tower and an oriel window. There have been three additions made to the original building.

History: George's Square. Was set aside for public use in 1835 in the Edward Palmer Plan of Oakville. In 1875, it became a public park and a fence was erected to keep cattle out. In 1888, Wilfred Laurier spoke here to a crowd of 1500. The cenotaph was erected after WWI and the benches were added by the Royal Canadian Legion after WWII.
