This dataset provides a snapshot of all currently active building permits issued by the Building Services department. It includes essential details such as the permit number, type of permit (e.g., residential, commercial, additions), current status, issue date, project description, and the property address where the work is being performed.
Each building permit is linked to its corresponding address point in Oakville and can be connected with related datasets such as zoning data, inspection records, excavation and street occupation permits, and ServiceOakville requests. This makes the dataset a valuable resource for tracking construction trends, urban development, and planning activity within the town.
This dataset includes around 6,800 active building permits in the Town of Oakville. Most permits are already issued, making up about 70% of all records. Another 15% are in conditional status, while the rest are in various review or draft stages.
About 2,000 permits are for new or additional residential dwellings, making this the most common type. Around 1,100 permits are for alterations or improvements to existing homes, and over 1,000 are related to townhouses. Other types include secondary buildings, commercial and institutional renovations, demolitions, plumbing-only permits, and accessory units.
Over half of the permits are for single-family detached homes. Townhouses make up about 15%, with other common types being decks, offices, condos, stores, and semi-detached houses.
About 1 in 4 permits are for projects valued between $100Kâ$500K. Another 1 in 5 are in the $10Kâ$50K range, and roughly the same amount are worth between $500Kâ$1M. Around 8% of permits are for high-value projects over $1 million.
The year 2024 has the most active permits, with around 1,700. Recent years like 2022, 2023, and 2021 also saw strong activity, each with over 1,000 permits. This shows a consistent trend of growth in construction and development across Oakville in the past few years.
The street with the most active permits is Rebecca St, with over 100 permits. Other busy streets include Speers Rd, Lakeshore Rd W, Post Rd, and Sixth Line.
Central Oakville has the highest number of permits, accounting for nearly 40% of the total. The West and East areas follow closely, showing balanced growth across the town.
