History: Built in the mid-1870s by Alfred Mapes, a carpenter involved in the construction of a number of buildings in Oakville during the 1860s and 1870s. The property was originally owned by a large Montreal mercantile firm of Forsythe, Richardson and Company who became involved in an unsuccessful business venture with Colonel William Chisholm to develop waterpower from the Sixteen Mile Creek. In 1837, the property was sold to Willett Miller and from there the property had a number of owners.
